Saltwell Park, Gateshead: An Amazing Morning Out

So, some of you may have read yesterday’s post on days out in the North East. We like to see what we can enjoy locally rather than paying into huge soft play areas and profit-making activities! The post reminded me how much I love our favourite place, Saltwell Park, so this morning, at 8:30am, I bundled the girls into the car and off we went!

A little about the park – it’s situated just past the Angel of the North in Low Fell, Gateshead. It’s a gorgeous place with a lovely high street packed with local shops, bars, restaurants and cafés. I spotted one restaurant in particular that looked lovely, The Bank, and will be returning with Daddybear!!!

So, the park!!! It has so much to offer: a lake with ducks and boats; 2 play areas; bowling green; rose garden; planned walking routes; a maze; Saltwell Towers where there’s a coffee shop; let’s corner and the dog exercise area, the only area of the park where dogs are allowed off their leads…

Here are our favourite things to do there:

Enjoy a Nice Walk
It’s amazing to take in the scenery around the park, especially at this time of year! The girls both love nature and I think it’s an important part of their development as human beings. I managed to take some shots of the sights we saw which included some lovely autumn scenes, lots of squirrels and the gorgeous statue and tower. There’s also a sign pointing the way to a number of colour coded walks to help lead a healthy lifestyle. These vary in incline and distance, which I think is great!

Play!
The park has lots of activities for children and families from open fields to run around on, to 3 age-appropriate play parks, pet’s corner and the boating lake with swans and ducks! I also spied a couple teaching their daughter to ride her bike around the bowling green where it was quiet! Orlaith braved the big slide today and enjoyed the swings too!

Explore
Living in a housing estate can be restrictive and the park is a great place to let the kids have some freedom. Orlaith can walk without holding my hand, kick in the leaves without the worry of cars and explore what the outdoors offers; this is what I love most about the park!

I have one more picture collage full of my favourite images of the day. Sorry if there are any duplicates! I also have the album over on my Facebook page which you can find by searching for Mammybear’s Blog 🙂
